Glee & Autotune
I just had to do this post cause I’m hearing too much about too “auto-tuned” songs in last night’s episode of glee, and even about all the songs from glee.
Adam Anders, the musical producer, has repeated many times that they are not using autotune except when they need to create a special effect to match the original song, like on “Telephone”.
However, when you record a song, you can’t just use the vocals as they come out of the mic to make a professional song. You have to mix it, master it, so it sounds as best as possible, even if you want to make it sounds like it really does outside of a recording. To do that they add some “effects” that do not change the pitch of the voice. It’s not “cheating”, it’s just producing.
If people are always talking about it, about glee, it’s probably because we hear the actors talking just before singing, and when the song starts, it immediately sounds like something produced in a professional studio, adding to the fact that the vocals’ rendering depends on the song and its style of music.
The real debate should be : Should they produce the songs in a more natural way, like some TV Shows did for a musical episode (I’m thinking about Buffy), or are they right to make it sounds as best as possible, like any current artist’s music, to release it on iTunes?
(Knowing they really need to use the recorded track for the show, besides the iTunes release, to use several shots during the scene.)
Me I just like it the way it is.
